The anxious vegan: Tips for avoiding overwhelm.

It’s very common for new vegans to feel overwhelmed by all the new information they now have.

Suddenly you feel like you need to watch out for everything – from what you eat to what you wear and the places you visit. You might feel your whole life changing while you are being stuck and unable to move due to fear and anxiety.

It doesn’t have to be that scary, though. Trust me, I spent years trying to figure out how to create a vegan lifestyle without my mental health keeping from doing it, and I found what can definitely help most of us.

I believe that with the right approach to these changes you can be motivated by them rather than scared.

As someone who has anxiety and knows exactly how stressful it is to live with it, I want to share with you a few things that help me deal with life and any changes it puts me through.

  • Focus on what you want to do first. If you simply want to start by eating plant-based then do that – it’s important to take small steps towards our vision, especially when we have anxiety and big steps usually keep us away from making any progress at all.
  • Take the time to step away from all the noise. Meditation, meditation, meditation – this is the secret to keeping the chaos outside of your mental house and being able to hear yourself first before you hear anyone else. Here are some of my favourite resources.
  • Protect yourself from the triggers. I hate this word as people use it nowadays for everything they don’t like, but when it comes to anxiety, there are such things as triggers that may make us more anxious. Find what makes anxiety worse in your case and then decide how you will face it without making the situation worse.
  • Surround yourself with those who lift you up. It’s so important to get rid of people who are not bringing peace in our lives and find those who do. Sometimes you will have to be alone before you will find your group of humans and that’s okay, too.

We will always be in the process of transformation as life is constantly forcing us to become stronger and braver. It’s so important to remember that we shouldn’t strive for a life of peace and ease, but for our personal internal strength to be able to face the world.

The world will always be too much for some of us, but we don’t need to let it have all the power.

Anxiety may be hard to live with, but it doesn’t have to be the reason for keeping us stuck in a place where we don’t want to be.

I am determined to create a life I desire even if anxiety never goes away: a matter of fact, having it and doing things with it, makes me even more aware of how powerful humans are when we decide to have or do something.

Give yourself permission to have anxiety instead of hating it and thinking about how much you are missing because of it. It’s just another challenge you need to face and the sooner you do it, the sooner you will gain the strength to continue.

Once you face it, you gain power over it.
